Notary travel fees by state

By Signing Fee Tools · Last reviewed Oct 28, 2026

It depends on the state. Some statutes set travel-fee rules: North Carolina allows actual mileage at the federal rate with written agreement in advance, Ohio allows a reasonable fee agreed in advance, and Nevada caps travel at $15 or $30 an hour. Others, like California and Florida, don't address travel in the fee statute. Check your state's statute below.

What “does not address travel fees” means

The fee statute is silent on travel. It doesn't say travel fees are allowed or banned. Your state's notary handbook or commissioning office may have guidance; check it before charging one.

Signing fees are different. The statutes below cap fees for notarial acts. The fee a signing company or title company pays you for handling a loan package is negotiated between you and that company, order by order. We don't publish “standard” or “average” signing fees; work out your own with the calculator.

Work out your own mileage cost

Mileage cost = round-trip miles × your cost per mile. Put it into the calculator with your time to see what an order really pays.
